Sunday Cleanse: Reach Down Towards Your Toes, and Up Towards a Coconut

A Two Step Cleanse:

Padangusthasana (Thumb to Foot Pose):

padangusthasana1

This asana plays an important role in beginning purification. It reduces the accumulation of fat around the abdomen. It works on all the internal organs (Udara) preventing and curing stomach ailments, relieving constipation (Malabaddata), a major factor in the build up of toxins in the body, which can trigger the beginning of disease. It eliminates flatulence and cleanses the rectum and anus. The liver and spleen are toned, the urethra is also cleaned. Piles are both prevented and alleviated. (Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga Yoga)

Coconut Juice:

coconut-milk1Coconut juice, also called coconut water, is the liquid found inside a fresh coconut. Contrary to popular belief, this liquid is not the same as coconut milk. Coconut juice can be purchased at most regular grocery stores. It is known as the cooling drink and is commonly referred to in Ayervedic medicine of India. Coconut juice has many uses for everday issues, from dehydration and bladder infections to improving hair growth and complexion! Coconut juice is a favorite beverage among Asian and Pacific Islanders. In addition to natural sugars, it contains a complex array of vitamins and minerals, which make it a nutritious beverage. It is high in potassium, chlorides, calcium, and magnesium, with a modest amount of sodium, sugar, and protein. It is essentially fat-free. On many small islands, coconut water is the only portable water available. For these reasons coconut water has been a lifesaver for many people and has been referred to as the “fluid of life.”

How else can coconut juice benefit you?

Check out this massive list:

Coconut helps detoxify and flush toxins out of the body; Soothes liver problems, such as inflammation; Naturally eliminates stress (is known in Ayerveda as a “natural stress-buster”); Cools sadhaka pitta, which is associated with emotions. (“Sadhaka Pitta: A subdivision of pitta dosha that governs how we process our experiences, it coordinates thinking, feeling, and emotions and is responsible for the fulfillment of our desires.” – experiencefestival.com); Has been billed “the world’s safest natural soft drink” for being a nutritious thirst-quencher; Replenishes electrolytes lost in perspiration; Cures stomach disorders related to aggravation of pitta dosha (“Ayurveda pitta dosha is one of the three ayurvedic humors or doshas that are responsible for the health of body in equilibrium state and for disorders during disequilibrium state.” – holisticherbalist.com); Helps urine retention from heat; Lowers cholesterol; Clears bladder infections, removes kidney stones, and improves sexual virility; Reduces fluid pressure in the eyes (good for glaucoma); Eases Hiccups.
